Turned out there is a MAJOR compatibility issue with Norton/Symantec products. After trying various solutions from around the web, I was still unable to connect to the internet or really even get an IP address.

i think that windows vista has alot of teething problems and which i make good is to full format windows vista sort of every 3 months but ive only had one problem with windows vista and internet which was linking server 2003 to windows vista ultimate and the net wouldnt work on any machine after i got server up and running anyway i hope this helps!
